         Brisbane’s Spotless Schools 2013

        ‘Overall Winner’  Primary School Category

2013 was the 5th year the Brisbane's Spotless Suburbs and Schools competition has been run in partnership with the Brisbane City Council and SITA Australia. The competition engages communities, schools and commercial enterprises in all of the 26 Brisbane wards and highlights their best and most spotless suburb and school.

Encouraging a cleaner, litter-free community, Brisbane City Councillors and community groups can nominate up to two suburbs for judging in seven categories, Community Pride, Partnerships, Litter Management, Resource Management, Environmental Protection, Young Legends and Litter Champion.  Brisbane’s Spotless Schools rewards recognise outstanding achievement in maintaining and improving litter and resource management, youth involvement and environmental protection.

Congratulations to Zillmere State School who demonstrated strength in all the areas listed above to win the Overall Primary School Category across Brisbane. Thank you to all the students, parent volunteers and staff involved in keeping our school tidy and managing our unique resources.

Zillmere State School was one of the 19 winners from the Brisbane and Ipswich area. Their project, ‘From Little Things Big Things Grew’, won a Showcase Award for Excellence in Community or Industry Partnerships.

Ten years ago the school recorded a cover of Paul Kelly and Kev Carmody’s track ‘From Little Things Big Things Grow’. Through this project the students, with support from staff and the wider community produced a documentary on what those past students went on to and recorded a new song, a cover of Troy Cassar-Daley’s ‘Dream Out Loud’ with some of their own lyrics.

The school found this project lifted student attendance rates and also encouraged parents and the wider community to get involved with their school.
